First encounter with Ear Infections

Garen has had a small cough and runny nose for about a week. But last night he was in obvious pain. He was so tired and kept trying to sleep, but would just whine and rub his ear. So I got him into the doctor first thing this morning and sure enough a very red ear! Poor kid. Hopefully the antibiotic kicks in quickly and we get a little more sleep tonight.

This is the first I've had to deal with ear infections. Maddie is almost 5 and has never had one. And Garen is almost 2 and this is his first.

Alisha, what is the stuff you buy to help the pain?
If anyone has any helpful remedies to help with pain or preventing ear infections please share!

You are so lucky to be a mom of 5 years and this be the first one! In the Rx part of Wal-mart where all the eye drops and thermometers are located (at least in my wally world) there is some drops for 'earaches' that I buy. Works like a charm! I have even used them and they go away so fast!

As far as prevention goes, if it's windy outside I make sure Taylor's ears are always covered and as soon as she shows signs of a runny nose I start giving her benedryl to start 'drying' her up so the fluid doesn't build up in her ears.

Hope he feels better soon! Taylor always showed signs of getting better after the first dose of antibiotics so hopefully he does too!

Emily, Giselle gave me your blog so that I could see your children. You have some of the most beautiful children I have ever seen. You seem to be a wonderful mom too. I noticed you asked some advice about ear infections. I'm not only giving you advice as a nurse, but as a mother of a child who always had ear infections her first three years. Out of all my five children, Aubrey is the only one who had ear infections. The drops are called Auralgan. There is also a company called Hyland that makes one called ear relief drops.
They sure help the pain. Always make sure his ears aren't draining. You don't want to put drops on an eardrum that has ruptured. A good habit to get into is to put a piece of cotton in his ear before you do drops. If it is yellowish it might indicate a ruptured eardrum. To prevent more ear infections, Alisha is absolutely right. At the first sign of a runny nose or cough, start him on a decongestant. When I worked at Dr Boehmer's office he recommended Pediacare. After Aubrey suffered for 3 years I started doing that and she never had an ear infection again. They were even talking about tubes in her ears. I'm working in the surgery center right now and everytime that children come for tubes, the ENT always tells the parents that since the child has had so many ear infections the child should have their hearing checked because they do loose some of their hearing each time. That is why most children who are prone to ear infections are delayed in their speech. The docs recommend speech therapy after tubes are put in. Children learn the most the first five years by listening. The docs always say they do get their hearing back after their tubes. So as you can see you need to try and prevent them. Alisha gave you good advice. Good luck! I hope he gets better soon! I'm glad he is on antibiotics. I can't believe all you girls are married and have beautiful children. Great job! Brianna is getting married in the Logan temple on June 20 and we're having a backyard reception on June 21st. Giselle will be here. Come see her. She'd love to see you! Love, Sayda

How wonderful to get that good information from good friends. Sayda, thanks for taking the time to give professional advice and to have Alisha give knowledge from her experience. We are surrounded by so many great friends.
I saw Travis in the store and he told me about the back yard reception, so good luck with everything.
